🪨 《When the Rock Was Struck: Rephidim and the Water of Mercy》
— A Literary Devotional Narrative in English
They had come so far—
out of slavery,
through the sea,
across bitter waters made sweet,
fed with bread from heaven.
But now—
they stood in Rephidim.
And there was no water.
Dust clung to their throats.
Children whimpered.
The elders sat in silence.
And soon, complaint turned to accusation.
“Why did you bring us here?”
“Is the Lord among us or not?”
“Are we to die of thirst?”
The voices grew loud.
The people circled Moses.
Stone-carrying hands began to rise.
“They are ready to stone me,” he whispered to God.
But heaven was not silent.
“Take your staff,” God said.
“The same one you used to strike the Nile.”
“Go to the rock at Horeb.
I will stand before you there.”
“Strike the rock.
And water will flow.”
Strike… the rock?
Could life come from stone?
Could mercy pour out from something so hard?
Moses obeyed.
He raised his staff.
And before the people—
he struck.
And the rock cracked.
And the ground trembled.
And from the broken stone,
water gushed.
Cool.
Pure.
Enough.
It rushed through the dry camp like a river of grace.
Children drank.
Mothers cried.
Old men bowed low.
The Rock had been struck.
And the people lived.
In their rebellion,
God revealed His mercy.
Not because they were faithful—
but because He is.
Later, Paul would write:
“That Rock was Christ.”
(1 Corinthians 10:4)
Struck once.
Living water forever.
