watching smoke rise from sacrifices
he could no longer offer.

He covered his mouth,
tore his garments,
and cried out,

“Unclean! Unclean!”
to warn others away.

But in his heart,
he whispered,

“Still Yours?”

God had spoken to Moses and Aaron:

“Anyone with a defiling skin disease
must be brought to the priest.”
(Leviticus 13:9)
