🛡️ 《Strangers in the Same Tent: Jacob, Laban, and the God Who Sees》
— A Literary Devotional Narrative in English
The years had carved lines in Jacob’s face—
not just from age,
but from striving.
Fourteen years for love.
Six more for survival.
Twenty years in Laban’s house,
and Jacob had become rich in flocks… and poor in peace.
At first, Laban had welcomed him as family.
But over time,
kindness turned into control.
Jacob worked hard,
and Laban changed his wages ten times.
Always shifting, always scheming.
Jacob built herds,
while Laban built walls.
What began in covenant
was now a cold, quiet war.
But Jacob was not alone.
Each night he lay beneath the stars,
he remembered a ladder,
a voice,
a vow:
“I am with you… I will not leave you.”
Then came a dream.
Not of angels this time,
but of sheep,
and of strategy.
God gave Jacob insight,
and flocks multiplied—striped, speckled, spotted.
Suddenly, Jacob’s wealth grew.
And Laban’s sons whispered.
“Jacob has taken everything our father owns.”
Laban’s eyes turned hard.
God spoke again:
“Go back to the land of your fathers.
I will be with you.”
Jacob gathered his family.
His wives.
His children.
His herds.
They left quietly,
while Laban was away shearing sheep.
But Laban found out.
He rode hard.
Pursued fast.
Seven days across the wilderness,
until he caught up with Jacob.
That night,
God came to Laban in a dream.
“Be careful what you say to Jacob—
whether good or bad.”
Laban arrived—
not with sword,
but with suspicion.
“Why did you run?” he asked.
“Why steal my household gods?”
Jacob stood firm.
“I served you twenty years.
In heat and frost, I kept your flocks.
You changed my wages.
You deceived me.
But the God of my father saw it all.”
He raised a stone.
“This is my witness.”
Laban sighed.
They built a pillar of peace.
A boundary.
Laban kissed his daughters.
Blessed his grandchildren.
And turned away.
Jacob… walked forward.
And above him,
the same God who once stood at the top of the ladder
now stood by his side.
