🎤 “She Leaves a Voice Note for Her Dad Every Night”
– Though He’s Gone, She Still Talks to Him
Seattle, Washington. 2021.
Every night at 10:01 PM,
Lena Ross, 27,
sits by her bedroom window, opens her phone,
and records a short voice message:
“Hi Dad. Today was hard.
But I wore the tie you gave me for that interview.
And guess what… I got the job.”
Then she saves it to a private folder titled:
“For You, Dad 🕊️”
🧔 Her Father, Michael Ross
Michael passed away suddenly from a stroke when Lena was 23.
They used to talk every night.
“He never ended a day without asking how mine was.”
“So now… I just keep answering.”
The first message was raw:
“I don’t know how to do this without you.”
The second?
“I didn’t cry at the grocery store today.
Victory?”
📁 Over 1,200 Messages Later…
She never missed a day.
Holidays.
Birthdays.
Ordinary Tuesdays.
Even during COVID, she whispered to him through tears:
“Dad… I feel so alone.
But hearing myself talk to you makes me feel less gone.”
🔊 The Power of Voice
She never plays them back.
“They’re not for me,” she says.
“They’re a bridge.
I imagine his soul checks in at night and just… listens.”
🧑🏫 She Now Teaches Others
Lena started a podcast workshop for grieving children called:
“Say It Anyway”
Helping kids leave voice notes for those they miss.
She tells them:
“Even if they’re not here…
your words are.
And sometimes, that’s enough to keep love alive.”
🕯️ Moral of the Story?
Sometimes we grieve in silence.
Sometimes we grieve in words.
And sometimes we grieve in whispers sent into the night —
not expecting an answer,
but needing to speak.
