🔥 《The Mountain and the Knife: The Binding of Isaac》
— A Literary Devotional Narrative in English
The stars had long since faded.
Morning crept over the hills of Beersheba,
but Abraham didn’t sleep that night.
He sat in silence,
his eyes fixed on the horizon—
and his heart breaking quietly beneath his robe.
God had spoken again.
Not with comfort.
Not with covenant.
But with a command that pierced like steel.
“Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love,
and go to the land of Moriah.
There, offer him as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.”
Isaac.
The laughter child.
The miracle boy.
The long-awaited promise wrapped in skin.
And now—God was asking for him back.
Abraham didn’t speak.
He simply obeyed.
At dawn, he saddled his donkey,
took two servants, took the wood,
and took the boy whose face he couldn’t bear to lose.
For three days, they traveled.
Isaac skipped beside him,
asking questions, humming songs,
laughing like only a boy can.
Abraham smiled,
but inside… he bled.
Then came the mountain.
Abraham turned to the servants:
“Stay here. We will go worship… and we will come back.”
A flicker of faith in a flood of fear.
As they climbed,
Isaac carried the wood.
Abraham carried the fire and the knife.
And then the question came—
“Father?”
Abraham turned.
“Yes, my son?”
“We have the fire and the wood…
but where is the lamb?”
Silence.
Then a trembling voice said:
“God will provide, my son.”
At the top,
Abraham built the altar.
Laid the wood.
Bound Isaac.
Isaac—still silent.
Eyes wide.
Breathing fast.
Trusting.
Abraham raised the knife.
Then—
a voice.
Louder than thunder.
Softer than a whisper.
“Abraham! Abraham!”
“Here I am,” he gasped.
“Do not lay a hand on the boy.
Now I know you fear God.”
And there, caught in a thicket,
was a ram.
Abraham wept as he untied his son.
Together, they offered the sacrifice—
not of Isaac,
but in his place.
The boy was spared.
The promise was sealed.
And the mountain had a new name:
Yahweh Yireh — The Lord Will Provide.
