🩸 《The Mark and the Mercy: The Story of Cain and Abel》
— A Literary Devotional Narrative in English
The fields were quiet that morning.
Dew still clung to the grass.
The sun stretched gently across the horizon,
and for a moment—just a moment—
it felt like Eden again.
Abel hummed as he led his flock through the pasture.
The sheep followed him without fear.
His heart was light, his hands honest.
Cain, meanwhile, stood in his field.
The soil had fought him, like always.
He wiped sweat from his brow and looked at the fruits he had gathered.
He had worked hard.
He had earned this.
They brought their offerings—
Abel, from the firstborn of his flock.
Cain, from the fruit of his labor.
They both laid them on the altar.
The fire came—
but it only touched Abel’s.
Cain watched in silence.
His offering smoldered,
but it did not burn.
It was as if the heavens turned their face from him.
His chest tightened.
His hands curled into fists.
Why him?
Why not me?
God saw the storm rising in Cain’s eyes.
So He spoke—not with thunder,
but like a Father trying to reach a trembling son.
“Why are you angry?
Why is your face downcast?
If you do what is right, will you not be accepted?”
But Cain said nothing.
God’s voice faded,
and another voice grew louder.
Not from the outside—
but from within.
Later, in the field, Abel smiled when he saw his brother approaching.
“Cain!”
But Cain’s smile was hollow.
His eyes, empty.
His shadow, long and cold.
And then—
The ground cried out.
Abel's blood soaked into the soil—
the same soil that once bloomed under God’s hand.
God came again.
This time not as a visitor,
but as a judge.
“Where is your brother, Cain?”
Cain stared at the earth.
“I… I don’t know.
Am I my brother’s keeper?”
Silence.
Then sorrow.
“What have you done?
His blood cries out to Me from the ground.”
Cain stood trembling, expecting wrath.
But instead—he was marked.
Not for punishment.
But for protection.
Banished, yes.
Wandering, yes.
But not destroyed.
Even in judgment,
God remembered mercy.
